Shoprite Group confirm case of Covid-19 at its Boksburg branch

According to the retailer, the employee, who was last in the store on April 4, is recovering in hospital.

The Shoprite Group has confirmed that one of the staff members at its Checkers store at Retail Park tested positive for Covid-19.

The store was, according to the retailer, immediately closed after the employee tested positive for Covid-19 on April 6. The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) and Department of Health were then informed.

“The store was closed immediately and a professional decontamination company was brought in to sanitise and deep clean the store before it reopened after inspection by the Department of Health.

“All employees in the store have been screened and those who had close contact with the infected person are now self-quarantining for 14 days,” said the retailer.

However, on the morning of Good Friday, the MMC for Public Health and various other government officials visited the store and instructed management to close the store for further inspection and employee screening. The store remained closed and waited on instruction from the authorities.

“On April 11, the store was reopened after authorisation by the Department of Health.

“This followed further employee screening and a second overnight sanitising and deep cleaning by a professional decontamination company,” said the group. Sanitisation, crowd control and employees wearing facial shields continue.

Shoppers are calmly queuing up to enter the Checkers store at Retail Park. Those waiting could be seen keeping a safe distance while waiting patiently to be allowed inside the supermarket.

Messages about the staff member who tested positive at the outlet have been circulating on social media platforms since Monday. Some concerned readers contacted this publication and requested that the social media reports be investigated.

This publication visited the supermarket on Friday morning. It coincided with the arrival of a group of both SAPS and EMPD officers, who had a brief meeting with management before the store was subsequently shutdown. @MthuphaFanie
