Calling all children, elderly and pregnant women to get vaccinated for flu

The vaccination is not compulsory, but strongly encouraged.

The Gauteng Department of Health is calling for people to receive their flu vaccinations at any of the local clinics or community health centres in their areas.

The vaccination period is set to take place from April 6 to 8.

Philani Mhlungu, the department’s spokesperson, said this call applies to all people who have not yet received a flu vaccination.

“If you have already been vaccinated, please do not present yourself to receive this service. The vaccination is not compulsory, but strongly encouraged. The influenza vaccine has no known efficacy against Covid-19; however, circulation of flu viruses will increase the pressure on the health-care system,” said Mhlungu.

Certain groups will be prioritised – pregnant women will be vaccinated on April 6, the elderly on April 7 and children on April 8. The vaccinations will start at 10am.
