Fence around field in Farrar Park is being erected

Construction work of the fence is expected to be completed within two weeks.

Residents of Farrar Park can breathe a sigh of relief as construction workers began to replace the fence around the vacant field in Farrar Park last week.

Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos explained that uncontrolled illegal dumping of building rubble, domestic waste and crime has triggered the call by Farrar Park community to have the fence re-erected around the field that belongs to DRD Gold Mine.

“Criminals also used to break into properties in Farrar Park and escaped into the adjacent bush which made it difficult for both the police and security companies to give chase,” de Vos pointed out.

Last year, DRD said that it would not erect another fence because fencing had been stolen or vandalised in the past.

The community, however, opposed the mine’s decision.

“Negotiations with the mining representatives were conducted in good faith, and an amicable solution was reached after only three intensive meetings held at the premises of DRD Gold.

The ward councillor also expressed his appreciation towards all residents for their support in the fight to have the fence re-erected.

He urged the community to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity around the fence.
