Bullied boy doing well after attempted suicide

The grandmother said the Department of Education failed to fulfill its promise that it will provide counselling for her grandson.

The Grade Six learner from Drommedaris Primary School who was fighting for his life in hospital after he tried to commit suicide is doing well.

The 11-year-old child allegedly tried to hang himself with his school tie on January 30, after complaining that he was continuously being bullied at school.

He went into a coma on January 30, but regained consciousness the following day at around 11am.

The child’s 63-year-old grandmother, who cannot be named to protect the boy’s identity, said her grandson was discharged from hospital on February 11 and has since been fine.

“We have also found space for him and his 10-year-old brother at another school in Reiger Park. While in hospital, he also received counselling from the hospital’s counsellors,” she said.

“Ever since the incident happened, we haven’t heard anything from the department or the school. They haven’t even told us about the outcome of their investigations. We are still left in the dark.”

The Advertiser has sought comment from the Department of Education.
