Dawn Park police urge community to make use of firearm amnesty period

Handed in weapons will undergo ballistic tests to ensure they have not been used in the commission of a crime.

Few firearms, particularly pistols, have been handed over to the Dawn Park police since the start of the amnesty period for illegal and unwanted weapons.

The amnesty period allows South Africans an opportunity to surrender illegal or unwanted firearms, ammunition or firearm parts to help clear illegal guns from the streets without prosecution. The amnesty period will run until May 31.

Dawn Park police spokesperson Const Nkemeleng Mabula couldn’t disclose how many firearms were surrendered due to safety and security reasons.

“Some of the firearms that we have received so far are expired firearms. We are still appealing to anyone who might have second thoughts to come forward and surrender their firearms before it’s too late,” Mabula said.

Requirements needed for the application documents are:

• Two certified copies of identity documents

• Certified proof of residential address

• Two colour ID-sized photos

• Certified copy of expired licence, front and back.

The public is still encouraged to use the opportunity to avoid prosecution. For more information contact the Dawn Park SAPS on 011 862 8000.
