Cansa’s annual Relay for Life boosted with extra action packed activites

Cansa will also offer prostate screenings, clinical breast examinations, blood pressure testing and Fotofinder screening, which is an early detection tool to fight melanoma, as well as skin examinations. All are available for a minimal fee.

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) will be holding its annual Relay for Life on March 7 and 8 at the Boksburg Stadium.

Yolandi Jacobs, Cansa community mobiliser fund-raising developer for the East Rand, said “Carnival of Hope” is the 2020 theme.

“Cansa Relay For Life is an opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, to remember those who have left us and create awareness about cancer,” said Jacobs.

Participants can look forward to some great additions to this annual fun overnight team experience which raises money for cancer education, care and support services.

“We made a few modifications this year and are proud to announce a host of additional activities. Among these are a stem cell donor registry and organ donor registry.

“The East Rand Cansa Relay for Life was also selected as a site for the colon cancer awareness tunnel and Cut 4 a Cause. People can stand the chance of being selected to have their hair cut on stage, in aid of Cansa, and then styled by a professional hairdresser.

“Furthermore we will be having a daredevil lap this year, where men create awareness about cancers affecting men by running in purple Speedos.”

“There are many activities happening at a Cansa Relay For Life, including an opening ceremony, survivor and caregiver lap, fund-raising and entertainment, the luminaria ceremony, the fight-back ceremony and the closing ceremony.

“Of course many individuals and teams stay at Relay overnight, making new friends and memories, sharing stories and walking the track all night long.

“These teams are also informed about the health awareness, advocacy, screening and support programmes Cansa offers to those affected by cancer.

“The event is very touching and also a lot of fun for the whole family as teams dress to the theme and either spend a few hours with us or the entire night.”
