Metro responds to resident’s concerns over losing electricity on meter

The City is in the process of testing the practical effect of rounding in the various meters procured via separate contracts.

In response to a resident being anxious about losing small amounts of electricity when uploading units on his prepaid meter, the metro said it is in the process of testing the practical effect of rounding in the various meters.

According to Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, metro spokesperson, it should firstly be understood that an electricity meter measures the units that are consumed.

“In this case, by several appliances in the home, including the geyser, lights and so forth. Immediately upon entering a value of 451.1 it is very possible for one tenth of a unit to be consumed depending on which electrical loads are active.

“In other words, unless all active loads are disconnected, a meter is continuously counting down on its loaded units.

“That said, the City is in the process of testing the practical effect of rounding (if it exists at all) in the various meters procured via separate contracts.

“As much as this quoted rounding may theoretically have been one tenth of one unit less, it will theoretically also be rounded up when at a value of 0.5 up to 0.9 is entered,” explained Cebekhulu.

He added that once the tests are concluded, the City will release a follow-up response.
