Mapleton youth leader plans unemployment march

Young people who are interested to attend the youth unemployment march may contact Hlungwane on 078 116 6573.

With the unemployment rate increasing, youth leaders in Mapleton have expressed their deep concern.

As a result, Iketsetse Youth Forum, based in Mapleton, has planned an unemployment youth march on January 27 to the JSE building in Sandton to address the scourge of unemployment among young people.

The march is scheduled to commence at 11am.

The organiser of the march, Nickel Hlungwane (33), said they hope to encourage listed companies within the JSE to employ more young people to decrease the statistics of unemployment in the country.

“We have already announced to the managers at JSE that we are coming so they are aware of the march. Our march will be peaceful as we are just going to hand over a memorandum to the CEO.

“We have invited young people from across Ekurhuleni to join us,” Hlungwane said.

Hlungwane, who is an event organiser, entrepreneur, motivator and a youth activist, said he has always been influenced by an artist called Bonginkosi Dlamini, also known as Zola 7, who hosts influential shows that help the community.

His passion for people has motivated him to assist where he can in his township in Mapleton.

He recently organised a youth dialogue at the Vosloorus Civic Centre where more than 300 young people attended.

Various departments, such as Labour Department, Department of Correctional Services, Department of Arts and Culture, Ekurhuleni Youth Directorate, NYDA and more were invited to exhibit and talk to young people about various job opportunities.
