Ward 34 councillor also frustrated with unkempt grass

Grass-cutting machines were seen operating in Boksburg this week. However, the Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the metro.

Overgrown grass is becoming a familiar sight in Reiger Park to the dismay of many residents.

According to the councillors for wards 32 and 33, Marius de Vos and Ashley Hoods respectively, the metro’s Parks Department had trouble servicing Boksburg in December, leaving public places such as parks, pavements along main routes and cemeteries unkempt.

Ward 34 Clr Charles Crawford said he regularly receives complaints from frustrated members of the community.

Ward 34 Clr Charles Crawford said the metro spent millions on a walkway in Erica Street but cannot maintain it.

“It’s clear that Reiger Park and surrounding areas haven’t been serviced since the beginning of December,” Crawford said.

“The grass in my ward is completely overgrown due to all the rain we’ve had lately and it’s becoming a huge problem. I don’t know what to tell the unsatisfied residents any more.”

Crawford said that the delay was caused by stolen batteries, labour issues and the rain, among other things.

“The department still needs to replace the stolen batteries and apparently the workers didn’t work until a few issues had been sorted out.”

Crawford expressed his disappointment in the department.

“Last year the metro spent millions on a filtration system (in Erica Street), on parks and beautifying the area, but they’re not maintaining it. It’s money wasted now.

“The children cannot enjoy the parks when the grass is so unkempt. They also built a walkway along Erica Street, but even this is now unkempt.”
