New leader at Reiger Park Secondary aims to restore image of school

Martins also appealed to all the stakeholders, including, parents learners and community leaders, to play their role in improving the institution’s performance.

After a long wait the Boksburg school which came under the media spotlight after being hit by a sex scandal finally got a new principal.

The Department of Education, working alongside the SGB, appointed the Reiger Park born and bred Shawn Martins as the new principal of Reiger Park Secondary. He officially took the helm in November, last year

The new broom replaces the former principal of the school, Gregory Fisch, who left the school in 2018 after a series of pictures and videos showing him allegedly engaging in sexual acts with a learner and staff members in his office went viral on social media.

Commenting on his appointment, the principal said he aims to restore pride at the educational institution.

“With the team of dedicated staff members, and all the other stakeholders, we will try our level best to restore the image of the school and transform it into one of the best institutions which produce good results at the end of the year in the district.

“We want to become a school that produces top future academics, and make everyone feel proud to be part of this institution,” said Martins.

The confident leader worked for the Department of Education’s Ekurhuleni district office for the past 26 years. He previously worked as an assessment facilitator, and comes with 12 years of experience in management. He holds a BEd honours in educational management and leadership.

The principal added that he is happy with the measures taken by Raymond Tekana during his tenure as the acting principal at the school, saying the school’s current system is moving well.

Tekana and his team’s efforts resulted in improved matric results compared to the previous year. The 2019 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations saw the school achieving 71.6% matric pass rate – an 8.6% increase from the 63% pass rate the previous year.

“I’m pleased to be appointed to manage and lead this school in particular. I have a dedicated and cooperative team which is very keen to produce positive results.”
