Man accused of shooting Siya appears in court

The police have since launched a manhunt for the two unknown suspects who fled the scene.

The man suspected of shooting an 11-month-old baby in Windmill Park will appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on January 16 for a bail application.

The baby died the following day at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The man (27) made his first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on January 6.

He faces charges of murder and attempted murder.

The suspect is accused of shooting Siyabonga Buthelezi on January 2 after a shoot-out ensued between him and other two men in Windmill Park.

Dawn Park Police Station commander, Lt Col Johannes Makhubo, said it is alleged the two men came out of a white Polo vehicle, and shot at a man who was on foot.

“A shoot-out ensued between the three men and unfortunately an 11-month-old baby, who was being carried by her 12-year-old sister, got shot.

The charge of attempted murder relates to the deceased’s older sister.

“Two of the men managed to flee the scene, but the police arrested the suspect who was walking on foot,” he said.

Makhubo said the suspect was shot in the leg.

He could not confirm if the shoot-out was gang-related.

The police are urging anyone with information to call the Dawn Park SAPS on 011 862 8000.

* The boy who was shot in crossfire between suspected gangs will be buried on January 11.
