Travelling tips for your December journey

When travelling keep your destination and potential problems in mind.

The festive season is an opportunity for many of us to spend some time away with family and friends. However, when travelling it is important to consider several things to ensure that your trip is safe and enjoyable. Here are some tips to help you make your trip safe:

Notify someone you trust about your travels

When traveling make sure to tell loved ones when and where you plan to travel. Notify them when you leave and when you arrive. This way someone will know if something went wrong during your travels.

Make sure you have the necessary documents

Whether travelling locally or abroad make sure you have the necessary identification for yourself and your vehicle with you. By doing this you can prevent unnecessary problems should you be stopped, either by traffic police or customs officials.

Make sure you know how to change a tyre

Unforeseen events happen and flat tyres are common when travelling long distances. Familiarise yourself with how to use the tools in your vehicle before setting out.

Stay hydrated

In sunny South Africa the temperatures in December can skyrocket. During our travels we can become distracted and not realise that we are slowly becoming dehydrated. Keep a bottle of water with you while travelling and take regular drinks to stay hydrated.

Check the conditions of your destination

When travelling to a new destination be sure to check whether the conditions are different from your home. Always make sure the water is drinkable from the taps and if not, be sure to take water with you. If travelling north be sure to check whether you are entering a malaria zone and whether preventative medication should be taken.

These are just some tips to help keep you safe during your travels. Have a safe journey and enjoy the break with your loved ones.
