Ward councillor laments Boksburg North Swimming Pool’s lack of maintenance

According to the ward councillor, the swimming pool is a wonderful facility that hosts many galas; however, it is in need of general maintenance.

In the light of rising temperatures that will attract more visitors to the Boksburg North Swimming Pool, maintenance of the facility has been questioned.

Ward 22 Clr Ruhan Robinson is concerned that a few issues could prevent visitors from having a joyful experience at the Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool.

“First and foremost, the turnstiles are broken, which means that they are unable to collect entry fees. This also poses a threat to the public and staff as there is no access control and anybody can enter the premises,” said Robinson.

“I’m concerned about security at the swimming pool. It appears that vagrants enter the premises at night to steal items such as shower tops. This happened over a period of time.”

He added that visitors are also up in arms about the fire hydrants that have not been serviced and a fire pipe that is leaking.

“The leaking pipe is being used to fill the pool; however, it is still an issue as it is affecting the chlorine strength.

“Stormwater pipes should also be re-diverted as they contaminate the pool.

“Furthermore, the electric timing device is not working and it appears that only one of five heat pumps is working. The ventilator is also broken despite the several attempts made to fix it.

“The pool can also not be serviced weekly as it’s supposed to as there are not enough sucking machines available. Apparently, they have to share the machine with other facilities.”

Robinson stressed that there are not enough first aid kits available and that there is a shortage of staff.

The Advertiser visited the facility on a rainy day and saw that the roof was leaking and the bathrooms were in need of maintenance.

“Residents aren’t expecting the metro to spend millions on fixing the pool. They just want the metro to do basic maintenance, like cutting the grass. Ekurhuleni should attend to all issues mentioned as soon as possible. It will only become worse if not fixed.”

No comment was received from the metro at the time of going to print.
