Watch: Police arrests suspect seen in video stealing a cellphone

The arrested suspects will be detained at Boksburg North SAPS and they will appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Boksburg North SAPS arrested a suspect who was seen on CCTV stealing a cellphone on December 4.

According to Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube, it was alleged by a 28-year-old victim, Lovemore Leoatla, that he was visiting his colleague at a house in Lilian Street, Witfield, to discuss their engineering matters when two suspects were seen breaking into his car.

They fled with his black Samsung cellphone.

“There are CCTV cameras around the house, which assisted us in catching the suspects,” said Ramaube.

“On December 9, a victim’s colleague noticed one of the suspects as he was reversing his car wearing the same clothes he was wearing in the video and he alerted the police.

“Police sergeants Frans Ledwaba and Solomon Hlengane quickly rushed to arrest the suspect.

“However, during the arrest the suspect confessed to have committed the crime and led the police to another suspect whom sold the stolen phone at R600 at the Angelo informal settlement in Boksburg.

“The second suspect was not part of the crime although he was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property while the other suspect on the video is still sought by the police. The confiscated cellphone will be used as evidence in a court of law.”
