A gang of armed robbers who snatched a woman’s handbag at The Square shopping centre on December 7 left empty-handed after being overpowered by shoppers.
The suspects appeared to be armed with a gun, however, the manager at Spar, Frans Gouws, suspects it was a toy.
According to Gouws, the woman went into one of the shops to purchase a bag of ice.
On her way back to the vehicle, suspects grabbed her handbag.
“I went out to see what was going on after I saw people running. Outside I saw that they were robbing a woman of her handbag.
“Community members rushed to help the woman when they saw what was happening.
“As they tried to flee, community members tried to stop the suspects. In the process they left her bag. We’re grateful that nobody got hurt and that the lady got her bag back.
“The robbers, however, escaped.”
