Metro well aware of the challenges posed by rising unemployment

"The current unemployment challenges that are confronting our country are reflective of the situation in the metro." - mayor

Mayor Mzwandile Masina said during the recent council meeting that South Africa’s unemployment rate increased by 0.1 per cent to 29.1 per cent in the third quarter of 2019.

“What this means is that 6.7 million job seekers are looking for jobs.

“Having already put in place the overall policy framework that underpins our governance work, we have over the past few months been enforcing a tight implementation plan and getting departments to actively discharge their tasks of rolling out service delivery spending,” he said.

He mentioned that cementing the metro’s capacity is critical to leveraging capital projects through private participation.

“One such private investment is the Sam Ntuli Mall in Katlehong, which has been officially opened to the public. The project has made a R400-million investment in the community of Kathorus.

“Subsequent to making access to retail facilities closer to the community of Kathorus, the Sam Ntuli Mall created 1 200 job opportunities during the construction of the mall. Upon its launch, the mall will create a further 800 jobs in the area.

“Furthermore, 90 per cent of all contract value of the project was sourced from Ekurhuleni.”
