Police arrest man acting as Commisioner of Oath

The police members involved received praise from management for their swift reaction.

Following a tip-off from members of the public, the Boksburg police arrested a man who was acting as Commissioner of Oath, certifying documents from a shop and charging people between R50 and R150 for his service.

Immediately after receiving the tip-off on October 25, undercover police officers Const Motimele, Const Ntshodisane and Const Moumakwe went to the man’s shop located on Leeuwpoort Street, opposite the Boksburg Traffic Department.

One of the members approached the man and asked to have some documents certified.

Unbeknown to the man, he reportedly certified the police officer’s documents and charged R50 for the service.

The officer paid the charged fee and thereupon, along with other officers, arrested the suspect. He was charged with fraud, and was scheduled to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon. The man’s equipment, including stamps used for certifying documents, were confiscated.

The intelligence-driven investigation also led to the arrest of another man suspected of dealing in dagga in the same shop.
