Please continue donating water to animals at East Village

Soaring temperatures and the lack of rain caused the dam to dry up.

More water donations are needed to get the dam in East Village, Sunward Park, filled to help the animals living in the village.

East Village has a park area with a dam where ducks, geese and swans live. The dam is not very deep, but in normal rain fall times holds enough water for the animals through the winter months.

In an attempt to help these animals, Uniprop Boksburg started the initiative of collecting water from the community to fill the dam.

Since the plight of the animals has been highlighted on social media, it has sparked huge effort from lots of people assisting with water during the first week of the project.

They managed to collect approximately 65 000 litres of water so far. Donations were made by, among others, Paintworx, Costa Farms, Makopano, Graphite Security and South African Water Warriors, along with members of the public.

It is, however, not nearly enough to fill the dam and it has been a quiet week for the project, with only a few members of the community donating a few bottles of water.

Ducks, geese and swans are urgently in need of water as the lack of rain caused their dam to dry up.

According to Rozelle van Schoor, one of the organisers from Uniprop, the dam is now only approximately 20 per cent full, despite the generous donations.

“We are desperately in need of more donations and we are still praying for rain. Unfortunately, we can’t relocate the animals to another dam as they are already established at East Village and their eggs are laid there. It’s their home.

“I would like to thank everybody who supported this project.

“We are still accepting donations as it’s an ongoing project. Members of the community are also welcome to visit the dam to donate water,” said Rozelle.
