Local SANBS branch honours blood donors

Held at the Airport Gardens Boutique Hotel in Beyers Park, the event was well attended and donors received awards based on the donation milestones they have reached so far.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) branch in Boksburg recently held its annual donor awards to recognise those who continuously give the most needed, precious gift of life – blood.

Prior to the handover of awards, those in attendance were addressed by the Vaal Zone donor director, Getty Simelane, donor services senior manager Siemi Prithvir-Ray and other guests speakers.

Prithvir-Ray said because of the commitment by the dedicated over 550 000 blood donors in South Africa so far, SANBS had been able to collect enough blood to meet the demands.

These blood donors were among those who were rewarded for their contributions in the various categories based on the total number of donations made during the past 12 months. They have so far donated 100 times.

“We have met all demands for red cell products this year, with no cutting or reducing of orders. You have been the strongest contributing pillar to the blood services in this country and without your loyalty and dedication we certainly would have battled to have what is a world-class service.

“Your contribution over many years in donating selflessly can be aptly described as service to mankind of the highest order. You can be extremely be proud that you have contributed to the well-being of millions of South Africans,” said Prithvir-Ray.

Prithvir-Ray also pointed out that the total panel of donors has increased by 10 per cent and black donors went up by almost 50 per cent in the previous financial year.

Boksburg donors have, according to Prithvir-Ray, collectively contributed to the production of 39 150 products over the numerous years of donations.
