Groeneweide hosts fun day to boost community wellness

The exco team, which consists of about seven committee leaders of Groeneweide, hosted a community get-together fun day at the Groeneweide Community Park.

Residents of Groeneweide grabbed their children, mobilised their neighbours and got the party started on September 28.

The aim was to build a strong relationship among residents so that they can get to know each other a little better.

The day kicked off with a motivational walk at 8am which saw the young and old walk through the streets of Groeneweide while chatting to each other.

Other activities included netball, volleyball, soccer, a colourfest and dance competition.

According to Shaun Koneight from the exco, the reason why they decided to host the fun day at the park was to create awareness around substance abuse because many youngsters in the area are using the park for drugs and other illegal activities.

Xolile Luphoko, exco chairman, said: “We are in the process of finalising the legality of enclosing our area so this fun day will assist everyone to know one another before we go ahead with such plans. We have hosted a similar event in 2017 and this year we went all out to make it as successful as last time.”

Various professionals were called to address the residents on various subjects.

Daniel Seleme from Caxton Local Media spoke about pros and cons of social media, Haupt Feldtman spoke about public speaking, and Lebohang Motsoeneng from the Department of Social Development spoke about substance abuse.

Other speakers included Fakazile Mntambo (Department of Labour), Const Nkemeleng Mabula (Dawn Park SAPS), and Decathlon.

Sponsors included Debonairs Pizza Elspark, Pick n Pay Elspark, Makopane Security, Cornershop, Decathlon and Amos gym.
