Sixty five trees donated to Thulasizwe Primary

Landiwe Ngubo, who is the citizenship manager for U-Light and CTM Brakpan, said planting the trees at the school was their way of giving back to the community in an educational element.

Arbor Week, celebrated annually in September, calls for South Africans to plant indigenous trees as a practical and symbolic gesture of sustainable environmental management.

In doing so, CTM and Italtile Brakpan, in partnership with the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa), planted 65 trees at Thulasizwe Primary School in Windmill Park on September 6.

Lameez Eksteen, project manager for Wessa, said: “Italtile came to us and told us they wanted to do something in the community for the Arbor Week programme.

“We have already planted trees at two schools around Johannesburg and Boksburg. The school needed to be within the proximate of CTM, that’s why we selected Thulasizwe Primary. We are still going to conduct workshops on how teachers can use the garden as a biodiversity educational outdoor classroom.

“There are a lot of lessons from the curriculum that can be taught in the biodiversity garden.”
