Fun-filled event shines a spotlight on rhino conservation

The objective of the event was to create rhino awareness, as September marks Rhino Month, in the environment sector and it coincides with World Rhino Day, which is celebrated on September 22.

Divine Be Gracious Boksburg, in conjunction with Checkers Hyper, hosted a fun-filled day for children on September 14 in support of Insimbi Legacy Projects.

Face painting, hair spraying and a spot the difference and colouring-in competition were all part of the day’s activities.

Children were also drawn to the mascot, Rhiny the Rhino, who handed out sweets to the children sponsored by Checkers Hyper.

Checkers Hyper also sponsored prizes that were given to the winners of the day’s competitions.

Insimbi Legacy Projects is a non-profit organisation which aims to conserve and protect rhino against poachers.

Carmela Lattanzi started Insimbi Legacy Projects when one of her dominant rhino, Insimbi, was killed in a poaching incident. She is devoted to protecting rhino and realised that she is need of the public’s support.

Therefore, she decided to invite the public to the reservation during the Adventure With A Cause weekends, which is organised once a month during full moon.

Insimbi Legacy Projects’ reservation is situated in Northern Limpopo and people can pay a visit to see rhino and engage in rhino monitoring, foot and vehicle patrols and tactical shooting.

Their programme is hands on, where guests can see the amount of effort and dedication required to protect these gentle giants.

The rhino are kept in their natural habit where they are protected against poachers with state-of-the-art surveillance equipment and armed security guards.

Musician Bob Ffole has also become the latest spokesperson of Insimbi Legacy Projects and uses his musical platform to promote the project.

Sharon Janse van Rensburg, owner of Divine Be Gracious and ambassador of the Insimbi Legacy Projects, expressed her shock at how many children are oblivious of rhino.

“During the launch of our fund-raising tins, it became clear that children are unaware of the plight of our gentle giants. This is why rhino awareness is so important,” said Sharon.

Competition

Divine Be Gracious is running a colouring-in competition in an ongoing effort to promote rhino conservation. Entry fee is R20 and children may enter the competition at Checkers Hyper. Winners will receive a hamper to the value of R270.
