Boksburg SPCA treats more than 100 dogs in Vosloorus

Residents brought their dogs for rabies vaccinations, dipping and deworming.

The Boksburg SPCA showed its commitment to animal welfare on August 28 during their outreach programme in Vosloorus.

The Boksburg SPCA’s resident veterinarian, Dr Muntu Andre, the staff and committee members set up a mobile station in the Vosloorus Police Station’s parking area.

The SPCA treated them to a complimentary bag of dog food and each dog owner was given an informative pack of flyers on pet care and nutrition.

Boksburg SPCA chairperson Willie du Plessis said: β€œThe Vosloorus community was very welcoming and it was a success. We used the opportunity to educate owners in respect of sterilising their animals and vaccinating puppies with the five-in-one vaccine to prevent various diseases.

Johannes Kholu dips one of the dogs in Vosloorus during the Boksburg SPCA outreach programme.

“The SPCA will also use the information obtained on the day to build a database regarding owners wishing to sterilise their animals, most of whom cannot afford private veterinary services to do so. When the SPCA arranges sterilisation days in the future, they will contact pet owners on this database.”

According to du Plessis, dogs that were brought to the station on chains or ropes were given a proper collar and lead.

β€œStock of these, however, ran short and we are appealing to members of our community to please donate collars and leads for the outreach programme (these could be new items, or second-hand items in a good condition).”

The Boksburg SPCA thanks Robyn Johnston from Midlands Veterinary Wholesalers for the donation of 10 rabies vaccine bottles and syringes used on the day.

This donation covered at least 100 dogs.

β€œThe Boksburg SPCA will be returning to the same area every Wednesday to provide a complimentary dipping service.

“The society finds that this does not only protect the animals from ticks and fleas, but also becomes a platform for the community to report any known cases of animal cruelty.

“Other outreaches of this nature are planned for the near future and we hope more areas can be served,” du Plessis said.
