Security company empowers girls in honour of women of 1956

To celebrate Women’s Day, the local business Mubenga Security Services visited Comet Primary School to empower young girls.

As part of the celebration, the company donated sanitary towels and a range of toiletries to 101 Grade Seven girls.

Also on the special day, an occupational health technician gave a talk on issues affecting young women and addressed several topics, including hygiene and a healthy lifestyle.

The security company’s managing director, Thami Mubenga, said the donation was their way of celebrating women and part of the organisation’s social responsibility outreach.

Mubenga pointed out that her organisation decided to support the school after realising that most of the children are from underprivileged families. On Mandela Day they donated school shoes to dozens of learners at the school.

Speaking on behalf of the school, Grade Seven natural science teacher Nozuko Sobintaa thanked the organisation for the gesture of goodwill, saying the donated items would have a great effect on the lives of the schoolgirls, especially those who come from families living in poverty and do not have access to hygiene products.

Women’s Day is celebrated annually on August 9 in remembrance of the thousands of women of 1956 who marched on the Union Buildings in defiance of the apartheid pass laws and for equality.
