Armed response officer shot when responding to house robbery

The arrested suspect will be charged with house robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as attempted murder.

An armed response officer and a house robbery suspect were rushed to hospital on August 11 after sustaining gunshot wounds from a shoot-out between the two in Van Dyk Park.

The armed response officer was responding to a house robbery complaint in Kershout Street in Van Dyk Park around 5.30pm.

According to Const Nkemeleng Mabula of the Dawn Park SAPS, while the owner of the house and his friends were sitting inside the garage, two men entered the premises with one of the men holding a firearm.

“The suspects allegedly demanded cellphones, money and car keys from the victims.

“They then allegedly took them into the house and locked them in one room. They stole clothes, a television set and laptop before loading the items into their getaway vehicle, as well as the victim’s (owner of the house) vehicle.”

Mabula said when the armed response officers responded to the house robbery call, they spotted a suspicious vehicle and they ordered one of the suspects who was driving the vehicle of the owner of the house to pull over.

“The suspect allegedly took out a firearm and pointed it at the armed response officer who reacted by shooting back at the suspect and a shoot-out ensued.

“The armed response officer and the suspect sustained gunshot wounds and were both taken to hospital,” said Mabula.

The second suspect fled the scene with stolen items in their getaway vehicle.
