Residents in deep water as burst pipe causes major damage in Bardene

Approximately five houses were underwater and several cars were written off by Wednesday afternoon.

Some residents in Limbahout Road in Bardene are literally going through deep waters following a burst pipeline that sent gallons of water rushing onto the street and into people’s homes on Tuesday (July 30).

Fibre construction workers allegedly hit the water pipe by accident on Tuesday afternoon and the water levels rose during the night as the drain in the street is blocked.

Most residents were stuck at home and had to miss a day at work as the water is too deep to drive through.

Some residents called an Uber to drive their children to school.

A burst pipe and blocked drain caused major damage in Limbahout Road, Bardene.

Residents have reported the burst pipe to the metro, Ward 17 councillor Simon Lapping and even the mayor.

They are also concerned about water being close to an electrical box.

By Wednesday afternoon the water was turned off and the metro’s electrical department arrived at the flooded street around 11.23am to see what needs be done to solve the problem.

“We did not expect that it would become this bad when the pipe burst yesterday afternoon. The water was never this deep before. This caused a lot of damage. Two of my bakkies are underwater and my neighbour didn’t even sleep at his house last night,” said Tony James, a resident in the street.

Another neighbour added they have been struggling with the drain for years now.

“We are fed up as this problem has been going on for years now. They regularly have to open the drain to clean it but it’s not working. It’s a major issue for us,” said Louise Dalton.
