Get creative with the exciting Urban Ruins Mandela Day writing competition

The Boksburg Advertiser supports this wonderful initiative as part of its Caxton Cares project.

Does your school have the best creative writers? Do you know how to write or do you have a passion for writing? Then listen up.

Urban Ruins is calling all learners from Grade One to 11 to enter the 2019 Mandela Day writing competition.

According to Leigh Ingle, Urban Ruins founding member, the Write for Madiba @ 67 Words competition will serve as a fund-raising project while promoting literacy skills throughout the community.

Application for entries opens on July 18 and will run until September 2.

“Learners are invited to compose and submit short stories, poetry or prose,” said Ingle.

Prizes on offer include Lego packs, cellphones and laptop packs.

The entrance fee is R10 per entrant as long as there is a bulk application from a school of five or more, or individual entrance fee of R50.

Sponsors of the prizes are 3G Mobile, Boksburg Lake Rotary Club and Benoni Rotary Birthday and Macsteel.

Learners are not limited to any number of entries.

Brief: Grade One to Three learners

• Choose how you would like to create a picture from the theme, Proudly South African.

• Plan your drawing or painting. Draw or paint your creation in 67 minutes under the supervision of your teacher.

• Complete a learner entry form and attach it to your picture. Hand this form in to your participating school to entered on your schools entry form/ submit it to Urban Ruins.

• Pay R50 cash with your entry.

Brief: Grade Four to Seven learners

• Develop your own original, fictional story using a theme of your choice

• Use key words or draw your story in the story frame provided and take it with you to your writing session with your teacher. Write your story in no more than 67 minutes, under the supervision of your teacher. Hand write your story legibly, in print or type your story in Ariel font size.

• Write your story in English

• Spell to the best of your ability but remember your spelling skills will not affect the competition results. Spelling will be edited prior publishing of winning stories.

• Complete a learner entry form and attach it to your story. Hand this form in to your participating school to be entered on your school’s entry form or submit it at Urban Ruins.

• Pay R50 cash with your entry.

Brief: Grade Eight to 11 learners

• Simply choose a topic from the “ Catastrophe Saga Cards”. Research some background information for your scenario and then develop your original, fictional story.

• Write a short story or poem in 67 words (no more, no less). Give your item a title, which is not included as part of your 67 words.

• Hand write your story legibly, in print or type your story in Ariel font size 14. Write your story in English.

• Spell to the best of your ability but remember your spelling skills will not affect the competition results. Spelling will be edited prior to publishing of winning stories.

• Complete a learner entry form and attach it to your story (entry forms can be collected at Urban Ruins). Hand this form in to your participating school to be entered on your school’s entry form or submit it at Urban Ruins.

• Pay R50 cash with your entry.
