Firefighters battle blaze as diesel tank catches fire

Investigations are underway to find the definitive cause of the blaze.

The Boksburg fire station was summoned as a back-up on Tuesday night when a diesel tank caught alight in Pomona, Kempton Park.

According to the William Ntladi, emergeny services spokesperson, firefighters battled a fire after the diesel tank accidentally caught alight resulting in an employee being hospitalised.

He said Farrarmere firefighters as primary responders, received the call around 6.20pm.

“Prior arrival, a backup was summoned from Kempton, Tembisa and Boksburg fire stations respectively seeing the emission of flames and smoke into the atmosphere,” said Nladi.

“One male employee had to be hospitalised for partial thickness burn wounds on his lower legs. The patient was treated on scene and transported to hospital for further medical care.

“It is alleged that the patient was lifting a motorised hydraulic pump which accidentally tripped over, leading to the spillage of petrol from the small fuel tank that ultimately resulted into the motorised pump busting into flames.

“Subsequently, the diesel inside the hose, caught alight as well, spreading to the main reservoir tank which had about 6 000 litres of diesel at the time.”

He said the crews managed to extinguish it after the arrival of the third water tanker from Primrose fire station.

“No other damages were accounted for at the scene except the truck which was parked nearby that had minimal patches of heat damages on its body.
