Local law firm celebrates 125 years of legal service

The firm specialises in conveyancing, commercial law, administration of estates as well as family and commercial litigation.

This year Malherbe Rigg and Ranwell Inc (MRR) celebrates their 125th anniversary.

Among the dusty roads of the small mining town of Boksburg in 1894, a law firm was founded which, much like the modern town of Boksburg today, has developed, grown and expanded alongside the community it so proudly forms an integral part of.

The town Boksburg was the firm’s first home and this bond has remained intact throughout its years of existence,

Over the past 125 years, MRR has been a prominent law firm on the East Rand, receiving numerous awards in recognition of their outstanding service and the personal achievements of professionalism that makes MRR what it is today.

Directors, Dino Montepara and Brian Macgregor, celebrated the firm’s 125th anniversary.

The law firm had its humble beginnings at the hands of Malherbe, Beyers and Julias Konig.

The outbreak of the 1899 Anglo-Boer War proved a turning point in the make-up of the practice. Beyers turned to what became his true calling – the military – and travelled to Pretoria to sign up as a private with the Boer Commando, causing the partnership to be dissolved, and leaving only Malherbe and Konig in the practice.

In 1906 Malherbe was joined by Reginald Shaw Rigg, a former subaltern in the Royal Lancaster. He had arrived in South Africa in time for peace to be declared

The last addition to MRR’s namesake, William Ranwell, joined in the year 1933.

Some 30 years later, in 1963, Martin Victor Robinson joined the firm. He was closely followed by Jansen van Vuuren in 1967. The law firm later saw the additions of Peter Cooke and Jeff Matthee. They retired from practice in 2006 and 2014 respectively, but remain valuable members of the firm as consultants.

The staff of Malherbe Rigg and Ranwell Inc (MRR) recently celebrated its 125th anniversary.

Today the firm stands strong with a staff complement of over 50 people, each of whom plays a critical role in the impeccable service provided by MRR.

Over the years Ekurhuleni businesses and local government have overall recognised and placed MRR first in the Law Firms Category in the Ekurhuleni Regional Survey. They also presented the firm with the Golden Arrow Award in 2006 and 2008, and the Diamond Arrow Award every year since.

The firm also received further recognition for its achievement of excellence when it was presented with the Best Corporate Business Award which recognises superior performance by the executives, companies, personalities and achievers in Boksburg.

“Our success can be attributed to a very professional team,” said Brian Macgregor, who serves as a director along with Antoinette Swanepoel and Dino Montepara.

“The MRR has strives to provide professional and personalised service to every client who requires legal assistance and guidance. The firm has for the last 125 years perfected a professional legal practice that has a wealth of legal expertise and knowledge.”

Montepara, expressed his happiness of the company turning 125.“I’m super proud of the company and the staff”, said Dino.

“The MRR’s foundation was built on the ambitions and courage of a select few but it has expanded and developed alongside the community and continues to grow not only as a firm but as a family.”
