New CT scan machines for Tambo Memorial’s radiology department

More patients can be seen with the new, faster and more efficient machine.

If the changes in the pipeline to improve services at Tambo Memorial Hospital are anything to go by, patients will soon finally begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The radiology department at the hospital, formerly called BBH, will soon be equipped with a new state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) scan machines.

Installation work on the new CT scan machines, worth more than R11-million, is already underway and is expected to be completed soon, acting spokesperson of the hospital Thabile Mkhatshwa said.

“The CT scan will ensure that best image quality is achieved with the least possible radiation exposure to the patient. This machine offers 160 slices as opposed to the previous machine which only offered 16 slices.

“This means that more patients can be seen with the new, faster and more efficient machine,” explained Mkhatshwa.

She said one of the greatest challenges in computed tomography is the interpretation of routine scans in patients with metallic implants.

“The artifacts caused by the presence of metal can severely obscure nearby structures, making clinical diagnosis difficult or even impossible.

“However, this new machine’s innovative Single-Energy Metal Artifact Reduction overcomes this.”

Tambo Memorial Hospital to renovate the accident and emergency (casualty) department

The hospital will also be renovating the emergency and trauma unit which will result to limited services offered by the hospital. According to Mkhatshwa the renovations will commence in the first week of July and will be completed by the end of August.

This comes as part of planned refurbishing at the hospital that will assist in improving the patient’s overall quality of healthcare experience.

“The unit will not be closed completely, however, we will be prioritising patients in critical need and assist in stabilising them.

“Ambulance patients will be redirected to other hospitals and clinics for assistance until the services are up and running again,” said Mkhatshwa.

Patients and members of the community are requested to make use of the local clinics and hospitals in the interim.
