Video: Rotary Club of Boksburg inaugurates new president

During the induction ceremony a peace and remembrance candle was lit for their fellow stalwart Rotarian, Dave Beattie, who died last year on November 23.

After a fruitful year of leading the Rotary Club of Boksburg, Derek Fox handed over the reins to incoming president, Lebo Makhathini at an induction ceremony held at the Boksburg Ruby Club on June 26.

The induction ceremony was graced by Makhathini’s family and friends as well as Rotarians from 16 clubs across the district 9400.

It was a sad yet exciting moment for Rotarians to bid farewell to the outgoing president who was described as a mentor.

Fox has been serving for 15 years in the Rotary and has held the position of president for two terms.

The outgoing energetic president highlighted some of the club’s achievements throughout his term during his presidential report.

Supporting the club on behalf of the district governor was Heidi Tucker, absent on the evening, who shared her experiences as assistant governor.

Tucker’s speech was read by public relations officer for Rotary Club Boksburg Elsa Venter.

In her speech she thanked all 13 members of the club for their hard work and commitment to the community and Rotary.

She further highlighted that the local Rotary club will be receiving a presidential citation with a gold distinction for the 2018/19 rotary year.

Outgoing president Derek Fox handed over the regalia of the club to incoming Rotary Club of Boksburg president Lebo Makhathini.

Meanwhile, the Rotarian of the Year trophy went to Venter.

About five certificates and flowers were also awarded to the club’s supporters, partners and friends.

Makhathini, during her speech, encouraged attendees to mentor and connect the youth locally and globally.

“I believe if we can passionately mentor the youth of today, we will have future leaders that we can be proud of in our old age.

“I began my volunteering responsibility from the age of nine as I became inspired to be a Rotarian by a school friend, Lisa Johnson and Leigh (who founded Urban Ruins Project).

“Leigh was the interact club president in Sunward Park High in 1992 and in 1993 Lisa took over the club presidency role. Although I was not a member of the interact club due to transport challenges, I continued to volunteer at various roles in the community until 2012 when I met my mentor, the outgoing president Derek Fox who has helped me this far in my journey.”

Makhathini urged her fellow Rotarians to go back to basics of community education by passionately prioritising and promote the following projects.

“We need to establishing satellite libraries that drive academic support to promote quality basic literacy and education from early childhood development, primary schooling phase, environmental awareness on issues of preserving our water, environment, health, wellness and family unit food security projects,” she said.
