Boksburg most likely not to be impacted by Rand Water’s water shutdown

Despite Rand Water excluding Ekurhuleni, the City anticipates low water pressure to no water in some areas over the next week

Boksburg will not be impacted by water supply interruptions.

This follows Rand Water, which supplies Ekurhuleni City with water, conducting valve installation work for the duration of the period on the main supply pipeline  from Monday until June 27.

Initially it was also said that Ekurhuleni would be excluded from the 54-hour water cut, yet the metro warned residents about reduced water supply. The City of Ekurhuleni thus urges residents to utilise water sparingly.

“This is as a result of Rand Water, which supplies the City with water, conducting valve installation work for the duration of the period on the main supply pipeline.

“Rand Water has notified the City of Ekurhuleni of the planned reduced water supply and assured us they would keep their bulk supply reservoirs to a maximum capacity to minimise water supply interruptions,” MMC for Water and Energy Tiisetso Nketle said.

“We do, however, anticipate low water pressure to no water in some areas over the next week while the system recovers,” Nketle said.

As such, residents and businesses are cautioned to conserve water and implement immediate water saving measures to avoid complete depletion of supply.

Technicians will closely monitor water levels in the reservoirs and water tankers will be provided in the areas with no water supply. Areas with direct feeds from Rand Water and those in high-lying areas may be affected adversely and will be among the areas that will be prioritised.

Other measures to be implemented by the City of Ekurhuleni include securing the supply by filling the reservoirs – this may involve closing off supply between 10pm and 5am over the weekend in some areas.

Pressure management and throttling the supply will also be implemented where necessary.

Nketle distanced the City from statements attributed to the City made on various media platforms regarding the situation.

Below is a list of areas that should anticipate water supply interruptions for the duration of the Rand Water supply reduction. All reservoirs in the City of Ekurhuleni will continue to be monitored closely and any changes will be communicated.

According to a statement issued by Rand Water, the following municipal customers have been advised of the shutdown:

City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Mogale City, Rand West Local Municipality, Merafong City Local Municipality, Emfuleni Local Municipality, Rustenburg Local Municipality and the Metsimaholo Local Municipality.
