Cook and Culture: Some tips and tricks to get you through the longest night of the year.

Another week and June is the perfect month to start the little spoils of a dash of sherry when you cuddle up in front of the fire.

Digital

Make sure you have the Uber or Bolt,  formally known Taxify app on your phone. Even if you seldom use a taxi service, you never know when you had just a little too much to drink or when your car breaks down early in the morning during the school run. Parents, also remember to not allow your children to travel in a taxi alone.

Home Remedy

Keep your skin, and the children’s, moisturised this winter. Don’t let those lips crack, keep them soft and smooth. Make your own lip balm at home, mix half a cup of grated beeswax, two tablespoons of coconut oil and one teaspoon of almond oil, melt it down and let cool. You will have soft lips the whole winter through.  There are loads on recipes on Pinterest as well.

Winter Tip

Stay warm, but smart. Be extremely careful with hot water bottles, it can burst open and burn your skin. Rather make use of microwave bean bags, especially for children. There are fun and funky bean bags available at several stores that will make your children smile.

Apple Cider Margarita

Download the Pixzar app, scan photo, watch a video of how to make this drink one person can make.  We don’t all have a cocktail shaker and gadgets, but this recipe is so simple but will impress your guests at the dinner party. A real winter warmer, if you know what I mean.

Ingredients

  • Salt, cinnamon and sugar, a ¼ teaspoon of each
  • Crushed ice
  • 2 shots of good quality gold tequila
  • 1 shot of triple sec
  • Your favourite apple cider
  • Sliced apple, clementine segment or even lemon segment

Method

Rim the edge of your glass, wet it with a bit of water and then dip into salt, cinnamon and sugar. This will add the unique salty taste to the margarita. Add crushed ice. Add tequila, triple sec and then fill up the glass with the apple cider. Add a slice of apple and a clementine segment. Stir with a cinnamon stick. If you add any citrus juices you will have to give it a shake.
