Ekurhuleni youth stand a chance to be drone pilots

The Drone Build-A-Thon is an event that promotes drone industry opportunities to university and TVET college students and graduates. The event will expose them to drone industry players for possible job opportunities and start-up business opportunities in the sector.

 

The City of Ekurhuleni, in partnership with Mzansi Aerospace Technologies will be host the City’s first Drone Build-A-Thon and Demonstration event on Wednesday, June 12 at Tsakane Stadium.

The event, which is held to enhance access to economic and educational opportunities by youth, is part of the City’s Youth Month commemoration activities.

According to metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, a group of 14 youths who are currently studying engineering, technology or any field in drone industry have been selected from various TVET colleges in Ekurhuleni to participate.

“Two most promising participants (one male and one female) in the Drone Build-A-Thon will be awarded a scholarship to train to become drone pilots at one of the institution accredited by the South African Civil Aviation Authority,” said Gadebe.

“The event includes drone demonstration by some of the outstanding drone companies. Students that are aspiring to be drone pilots and technicians will get an opportunity to network with leading industry players, accomplished drone pilots and city officials.”
