Online applications for 2020 school admission postponed

Parents are reminded that schools and identified community centres will serve as walk-in centres to apply online for admission for Grade One and Grade Eight for the 2020 academic year.

The Gauteng Department of Education has postponed the opening of the online admissions applications scheduled for May 13 to May 20.

This follows concerns raised by the Federation of Associations of Governing Bodies of South African, Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysunie and other SGB associations.

The request was to delay the opening of Grade One and Grade Eight admissions for the 2020 academic year.

According to Gauteng Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona, these stakeholders pleaded with MEC Education Panyaza Lesufi to delay the opening, in light of the department implementing the newly amended admissions regulations and feeder zones.

“The concerned parties believe it is necessary to heighten greater awareness on the changes in legislation and admissions processes for public benefit,” said Mabona.

“We have thus acceded to the request and as such the admissions application period will commence on May 20 at 8am and close on July 22 at midnight.

“This is despite the department having constant consultative platforms involving all the stakeholders regarding the amendments to the admissions and feeder zone regulations.

“We note that all stakeholders accept the application of feeder zones but there are concerns that parents need a better understanding of how the new admissions platform works,” Mabona said.
