Boksburg Rotary Club urged to embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Skills that will be necessary to embrace the digital transformation era include complex problem solving, creativity, innovation and emotional intelligence.

The Boksburg Rotary Club recently held an informative session about the Fourth Industrial Revolution and its impact on Rotary in the 21st century.

The guest speaker was Prof Shamila Singh from the Management College of Southern Africa (Mancosa), who unpacked this revolution.

In her address, Singh shared her reflections on why it is critical for the club to embrace technology and innovation in the 21st century.

She emphasised that one needs to recognise the importance of technology and innovation in today’s world.

“You need to commit yourself to the changes we are experiencing in order to ensure sustainable development. The rapid growth in artificial intelligence and robotics is important for organisations to take note of as it will change how society and even businesses operate,” said Singh.

She spoke about the skills needed in the 21st century and said that some skills will become obsolete in just a few years while new skills will be required.

“The days of a steady and stable career are over. It is also clear that with the rapid pace of technology, many jobs, crafts and skills will go out of date in only a few years.

“But this will also encourage continuous learning, improve individual mobility and foster a growth mindset in every employee or member, year after year,” she said.

Singh proposed that organisations must consider digital transformation in the form of artificial intelligence, robotics, cloud computing and bots.

“Optimising the use of different forms of technology will enable integrated systems to report to donors, eco-systems for collaboration between different stakeholders, data analytics to influence the conceptualisation of projects and the ability to monitor and evaluate the impact of projects.”
