Speedsters caught for apparently rushing to work or home

The arrested drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving and are expected to appear in the respective Magistrate’s Courts on Monday.

The EMPD High Speed Unit on Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3 targeted the N12 eastbound by Atlas turnoff in the Boksburg area, the N3 southbound by the Rand Airport exit in the Germiston area, on Van Wyk Louw between Brink and Mikro Roads in Boksburg as well as Heidelburg and Dekema in Alrode.

The operations were conducted between 8am and 11am on both days.

On Saturday at just after 9am on N12 eastbound (a 120km/h zone), a man (26) in a red VW Golf Gti was caught doing 165km/h.

According to chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, the speedster claimed he was rushing to a hospital.

On the same Saturday between 9.50am and 1pm along Van Wyk Louw in Boksburg, three motorists, all men with ages ranging between 30 and 33 in two sedans and one SUV, were arrested.

They were caught doing speeds of 118, 106 and 100km/h on this 60km/h zone respectively.

“Reasons advanced were either late for work or rushing home,” said Kgasago.

He said the operation conducted on Sunday between 6am to 6.45am netted five speedsters at the intersection of Heidleburg and Dekema Roads in Alrode which is a 70km/h zone.

On the N3 south bound near the Rand Airport turnoff on the same Sunday, a man (21) in a white Renault Clio was nabbed doing 170km/h. He claimed he was late for a church service.
