Tender deal to upgrade park poses questions

The document revealed that the metro was also charged R93 286 for what is described as fixed-cost items, preliminaries and general costs.

The amount of money the municipality spent on upgrading Jimmy Cawood Park in Boksburg South has raised a few eyebrows.

Ward councillor Marius de Vos said the over R1-million spent on the project to install a few new items at the park was daylight robbery.

He said the most disturbing aspect was the amount of money charged for services that were not rendered.

According to de Vos, the contractor awarded the tender charged the metro for paving the park to the tune of over R113 000.

The Advertiser, along with the ward councillor, inspected the site on February 27 and found that there was no paved area in the park except for 870 bricks put around the rectangular perimeter of the outdoor gym area.

In a document obtained by the Advertiser, the metro upgraded the public park on Jubilee Road, at a cost of R1 000 182.

As part of the upgrade of the facility, 11 pieces of outdoor gym equipment were installed along with a few concrete tables, benches and seating blocks to the tune of more than R641 000.

Landscaping, site clearance and earthworks apparently cost more than R21 000.

“The non-existent paving highlights irregularities in the tender process and that the contractors had overcharged the municipality by hundreds of thousands of rands,” said de Vos.

The Advertiser is still waiting for comment from the metro.
