Cultivating rangers with a love for conservation

Any young person with a love for conservation is encouraged to join the organisation for a fun-filled year of activities.

The South African National Parks’ (SANParks) Junior Honourary Rangers (JHR) in the East Rand Region is looking for new members who have a love for conservation.

According to James Tavendale, the JHR is a voluntary group of rangers between the ages of 12 and 18 who participate in the Youth Development Programme of SANParks.

“It is the junior leg of the Senior Honourary Rangers (SHR), a voluntary organisation which has been in existence for almost 40 years and has a proud tradition of passionate service to SANParks.

“The JHR’s are involved in some of the activities of the SHR’s but will meet on their own and follow their own programme,” said Tavendale.

Seen here are the SANParks Junior Honourary Rangers during one of their outings.

“The JHR’s will take a leading role in conservation clubs and environmental projects in their schools and communities. Members of the JHR are also encouraged to visit the national parks.

“Our 2019 programme is jam-packed with exciting conservation outings and educational activities, so if you enjoy the great outdoors, this is the group for you.”

Membership costs R270 per year and includes a cap and T-shirt.

They meet every third Saturday of the month between 9am to midday at the Northfield Methodist Church, Benoni. Next meeting is therefore on February 16.
