Poor infrastructure, cable theft continue to plague Ward 17

The ward councillor's vision and goal for the ward for 2019 is to have the electricity issues in the Boksburg area resolved once and for all.

Ward councillor Simon Lapping says Ward 17 faces numerous challenges.

The ward consists of Bardene, Bartlett, Impala Park, Witkoppie Ridge and Jet Park.

“Infrastructure and poor quality contractors are probably the two biggest challenges in the ward,” said Lapping.

He said there is also a lack of political will to enforce by-laws concerning illegal dumping and construction, while cable theft remains a concern.

Since Lapping became a councillor in 2016 there have been a number of upgrades done in the Boksburg part of the ward regarding infrastructure to address stormwater issues.

“New valves and pump motors have been installed at the Witkoppie Ridge water reservoir and there is a new generator installed in case of power outages.”

“I aim to carry on monitoring contractors and highlighting poor quality workmanship. I will continue to drive solutions to issues that are related to the ward.

“I want all unqualified contractors removed from the supply chain of Ekurhuleni.”

According to Lapping, on his radar at the moment is the continual electricity problems in the Boksburg area and the issue surrounding the poor handling of the repairs done on Isando rd which resulted in a death of a motorcyclist over Christmas.

Lapping said the most common complaints in Ward 17 centres around electricity and water, as well as the state of our public parks.

“Remembering that councillors only enjoy a legislative role and may not interfere in the work of officials. I am more than happy to assist in escalating issues to relevant officials.

“It is important for residents to be aware that I need a reference number obtainable from the call centre, address where the issue is and a short description.

“Councillors do not have access to the Ekurhuleni call centre system so this information is vital for a speedy resolution.”

Residents of Ward 17 are welcome to contact Lapping on 078 350 5063 or simon@sosimon.co.za.

“Residents can also arrange to be put onto one of the many WhatsApp groups relating to ward queries in the different suburbs.”
