Little fighter Chereez Nel is winning the battle against cancer

Although Chereez is celebrating victory against the cancer fight, she still has a long way to go.

Chereez Nel was diagnosed with undifferentiated soft tissue sarcoma cancer stage three in 2018 but she has entered 2019 cancer-free. “The monster in my head is not there anymore,” said Chereez (4).

Chereez has a bright future ahead of her and started attending Step Up Pre-Primary in January.

The Nel family received a call from the United States of America in December with unbelievable news that Chereez is cancer-free.

“Words cannot explain the relief we felt,” said Chereez’s mother, Angelique.

The cancer nightmare unfolded for the Nel family when they noticed a slight swelling in Chereez’s cheek.

Since then, she has received proton therapy from August to the end of October at the Maryland Proton Treatment Centre in Baltimore, United States.

Chereez needs to undergo maintenance chemotherapy for the next five months to ensure that she stays healthy, and also needs to go for MRI scan every three months.

According to Angelique, the doctors will keep a close eye on her for the next 20 years.

There is also a possibility that abnormalities can form in her face in the next five to seven years as a result of the therapy.

“Although things can go wrong, we believe that God will continue to take care of our little girl, she is a real fighter,” said Angelique.

Chereez is excited about the ‘monster’ in her head that is gone and finds it difficult to understand why she still needs to undergo chemo.

The Nel family is thankful for the support of the community and cannot express their appreciation and excitement that their little fighter is healthy.

Although Chereez’s story is positive at this point, the Nel family still needs to pay R1.6-million back to a donator that made the USA trip and treatment possible.
