Cables stolen again in Boksburg on Monday

Power is expected to be restored at about 4pm.

Three feeder cables were stolen in parts of Boksburg this morning, January 21, leaving residents in the dark.

Affected areas included Plantation, Cason and parts of Boksburg North.

According to Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos, the cables were stolen in Plantation, Boksburg South and Atlas Road.

The Advertiser spoke to de Vos at the site where thieves stole a feeder cable approximately 16m long in Jubilee Road.

According to de Vos, a syndicate is responsible for the wave of electricity cable theft in Boksburg.

“I got a message around 1am this morning from residents in Boksburg South, alerting me that their power is off.

“Around 3am, residents from Plantation also complained about the same thing,” de Vos said.

De Vos said the thieves are well resourced, have powerful tools and know exactly where these power cables are installed.

He pointed out that there were no guards at the Jubilee Road site.

“The lack of police visibility in Jubilee Road is the cause of this cable theft. If we had police patrolling in these areas, thieves wouldn’t be cashing in on these cables.”

De Vos said there were guards looking after the cables in Plantation, but they were stolen regardless.

This wasn’t the first time cables had been stolen in Jubilee Road.

“Businesses around the affected areas are being hit hard because they lose so much in one day,” de Vos said.

The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the metro.
