Boksburg CBD still a dump

The parking lot in front of Boksburg High also remains an eyesore.

Ward 32 councillor Marius de Vos is still concerned about the state of Boksburg CBD,

“The illegal dumping in the parking lot in Leeuwpoort Street has become a health hazard,” said de Vos.

He said the Boksburg CBD is not just covered in a blanket of litter, but also a hotspot for vagrants to set up camp and sleep in any given spot.

He said vagrants are taking over Boksburg CBD.

“Vagrants use the sidewalk as bathrooms and leave litter wherever they go.”

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said in the interim the EMPD will monitor the situation in the CBD. Kgasago shared a response from the metro with the Advertiser, which shows that various vacant lots throughout the Boksburg CBD indeed causes the City of Ekurhuleni headaches as these areas are targeted by vagrants, informal recyclers and are also frequently used to dump excess refuse/rubble illegally.

The metro pointed out the Boksburg CBD is cleaned regularly but as result of the ill-discipline of the inhabitants in the immediate vicinity, returns to a state of disarray within a day or two.

The metro stressed the cleanliness of Boksburg is not the sole responsibility of council but each and every resident and business have a civic responsibility toward the cleanliness of the environment.

Residents and businesses are urged not to litter, not to dump refuse illegally and to place out refuse only on the day of refuse removal.

“I have approached the EMPD late October 2018 to remove the vagrants in the parking lot strewn with litter on Leeuwpoort Street. At the time the EMPD needed a truck to remove the stuff including torn sofas and beds.”

“The CBD is bleeding formal businesses on a daily basis and should the municipality not solve this problem, it stands to lose another business to delayed action.

“I’m aware of the acute housing backlog local government is grappling with but the laws and by-laws of the municipality should also be respected and duly upheld.

“These men are relieving themselves right next to the place where they sleep and many times in broad daylight in full view of the public.

“It is clear that the officials of the so-called best-run municipality of Gauteng have no urge in executing their duties and to keep the environment clean.”
