Petition underway against cable theft in Boksburg

A total of 491 Boksburg residents signed the petition at the Westwood Spar on January 12.

Ward 22 councillor Ruhan Robinson has taken an initiative to run a petition against cable theft near the Witkoppie substation with the aim of implementing change.

According to Robinson, the petition calls for a solution from the Ekurhuleni municipality’s side to prevent cable theft.

This follows numerous feeder cables being stolen near the Witkoppie substation.

The feeder cables supplying power to Boksburg have been stolen four times since December. Last week thieves cashed in on a 30m long feeder cable, leaving residents in the dark.

“I was asked by a lot of residents on what they can do to fight this and I decided to invite residents to petition council.

“The main aim of the petition is to show how fed up residents are by getting a large number of residents to sign this petition.

“I will be driving the issue for them but the residents are the owners of the petition,” Robinson said.

Robinson highlighted that the turnout on January 12 was successful as many people came from areas such as Dayanglen, Morgan Ridge, Boksburg North and other areas to sign the petition.

“Other councillors have also expressed an interest to run the very same petition and get some backing for it,” Robinson said.

  • Some of the messages written on the petition.

Fiona Lovell: “I’m signing this petition to try and stop the constant cable theft in Beyers Park.”

Byron Blignaut: “I am tired of the cable thieves getting away with all this copper and no consequences.”

Christian Mhlanga: “I am an ethical person who does not appreciate cable theft. It costs the economy and it will just increase our tax.”

Craig Young: “Frustrated, council must take responsibility.”

Barry Nel: “Our area is affected and the cost of running generators is ridiculous. The power outages make us soft targets for criminals.”
