Local pastor named Man of the Year

Du Plessis won R25 000 and a holiday for two to Mozambique.

Pastor Stephen du Plessis, founder of New Beginnings Care Centre, recently won the SA Man of the Year Award at a prestigious event held at Carnival City.

Propelled by the Department of Social Development Men’s Forum, these awards are aimed to celebrate and honour individuals making a difference in their communities.

They are also aimed at encouraging other men to also participate in nation-building and the protection of women and children.

Du Plessis, who runs a registered non-profit organisation that addresses the needs of the disadvantaged, won the Social Community Developer of the Year Award last year.

“Winning such a top award means so much because it shows the hard work we do at the centre is recognised.

“In this type of work, people don’t often get recognition. It gives us joy to have been honoured,” said du Plessis.

The centre has over the years opened its doors to countless destitute people, along with abused women and children, providing shelter, food and clothes while equipping them with skills to enter the marketplace.

Counselling along with drug and alcohol rehabilitation is also provided.
