Watch: Police ramp-up shopping centres policing on Black Friday

With Black Friday shopping already underway, the Boksburg police have intensified shopping centre policing and are on high alert.

The Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Const Ntsako Ledwaba, said that on Black Friday the station has deployed extra members to patrol the big shopping centres.

They have got some members on foot in plain clothes and in uniform, mixing with the crowds, and extra members in marked vehicles.

“This is part of our proactive approach to preventing the usual uptake in thefts, robberies, shoplifting, car break-ins and theft of motor vehicles during the festive season,” said Ledwaba.

“Police visibility has been bolstered in all shopping centres within our precinct because we know that during the holiday season shoppers become targets for thieves.”

Ledwaba urged shoppers to be aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activities, especially people peeping through windows of people’s vehicles.

“Most shopping centres are packed and shoppers find themselves in tight spaces on Black Friday. Therefore they must be aware of people who are too close, because they might be pickpockets.

“Being alert can prevent yourself from falling victim to criminals,” said Ledwaba.

Police advised shoppers to avoid leaving goods visible in their vehicles.

“Rather lock them in the boot, or if possible, get a family member to keep an eye on your purchases.”

Police reports indicate that there have been a number of vehicle thefts and break-ins of late, and this is one of the busiest times of year for that type of crimes.-@MthuphaFanie
