Lona Kruger Project bring Christmas cheer to local children

The feeding scheme is entirely dependent on donations for the continuation of their work.

The Lona Kruger Project has been in existence for three decades and continues to make a difference in the lives of Boksburg children.

The project hosted a Christmas party for 125 children at the Brakpan Air Field on November 10.

Rotarians – the Rotary Club of Boksburg and Boksburg Lake – attended the party.

Rotary Club of Boksburg Lake has been supporting the feeding scheme for quite some time now.

Apart from the purchase of food during the year by both Rotary clubs, the clubs will donate school bags to each of the children before the start of the next school term.

Public relations officer for Rotary Club Boksburg Elsa Venter said the party had been arranged and presented for a number of years under the leadership of well-known Boksburg businessman, Joan and Herman Muntingh.

“This year they were invited, through the feeding scheme of Minnie van der Merwe, to bring the celebrations to the Brakpan Air Field by two Boksburg businessmen, Kevin Cloete and Rob Ostner, who are the chairman and vice chairman of Brakpan Airfield respectively.

“It was soon clear that the children were in for a very special treat. Two helicopters and five fixed-wing aircraft flipped all the children whose parents had consented thereto.

“The aircraft owners took care of the little ones in their khaki-uniformed overalls while the pilots who flew them were in their formal pilots’ uniforms.”

“The children were unbelievably impressed, and the adults tearfully thankful for all day.”

Venter said there were also two jumping castles and a swimming pool for the children’s enjoyment while waiting for their turns.

“Tasty food was provided by the organisers in huge quantities. Sam Berriman, co-owner of the flying school, brought his own children along to give a gift to each child in the form of brightly coloured buckets filled with sweets.

“It was impossible to ask the children to eat the sweets only after their lunch, but they ate their lunch anyway,” Venter said.

Father Christmas handed out gifts sponsored by the organisers. They consisted of beautiful huge packs of foodstuff to take home to their families.
