‘Heroes’ lauded for making a difference in the lives of St Francis children

The St Francis Rainbow Cottage currently accommodates 32 children between the ages of two months and six years.

For the past 13 years, Bev Verweij and her team from Party with a Purpose have been providing children as young as three years of the St Francis Rainbow Cottage with weekly swimming lessons.

This has all been made possible in partnership with Swim Gym, located in the Lifestyle Centre, where the children are allowed to swim.

In the winter months, the children attend martial arts classes at Dojo Martial Arts in Benoni.

Rainbow Cottage offers care for neglected children.

Tilly Brouwer, St Francis centre manager, recently presented all those involved in providing these fun activities to the children with certificates of appreciation.

Short moments of personal attention ensures smiles and laughs in the pool.

“We thank everyone who makes the swimming lessons and martial arts classes possible. Teaching a child to swim is a gift for life,” Brouwer said.

“The learning of important skills like swimming contributes tremendously to reaching normal milestones in their lives.

Verweij said: “We love to work with St Francis. It is so rewarding and our goal is to make sure the children can swim before they leave the care centre.”

The centre is located in Olivia Road, Eveleigh, and offers quality palliative care.
