Three more officials arrested following the aiding of inmate’s escape

In September, the Advertiser reported that four correctional services officials were arrested for allegedly assisting an offender escape from Charlotte Maxeke Hospital on September 25, while he was attending a medical check-up.

Three more officials have been arrested and also charged with aiding the escape of an inmate from Boksburg Prison.

Mocheta Monama, Gauteng regional correctional services spokesperson, said: “So far, a total of seven officials have been placed on precautionary suspension pending the finalisation of the investigation which is due to be concluded soon.

“The Department of Correctional Services can confirm that investigations by both the DCS and SAPS were instituted into the matter.

“Following the rearrest of Mxolisi Booi, the offender was immediately moved to another correctional facility within the Gauteng region of the correctional services for safety reasons,” Monama said.

The offender was rearrested on September 26 after a chase by the SAPS, EMPD and the Correctional Services Emergency Support Team on the N12 near Daveyton.

He was found with his girlfriend, who was also arrested and charged with aiding an escape.

The offender had already served nine of his 18 years sentence for robbery.
