Watch: Four injured in factory explosion in Boksburg

The cause of the fire is undetermined however, it is alleged that it was caused by chemical reaction within the workshop. 

Four employees were hurt during an explosion at a factory in Boksburg yesterday afternoon (November 8).

According to William Ntladi, district manager media liaison of the Emergency Services, the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services  firefighters swiftly responded to a well alight structural fire in Main Reef road Boksburg just adjacent to Dunswart train station.

He said the call was received around 3.15pm.

“Firefighters from Boksburg Leon Ferreira, Boksburg Central and Rynfield fire stations, all responded simultaneously to the scene with a total of five fire engines.

“On arrival, one of the factory`s workshop was well alight. Explosion could be seen and heard from a distance as some of the 210 litre containers from within the workshop were ejected through the roof. “

He said sskillful defensive fire operation was initiated and fortunately, fire was contained and extinguished without further damage to adjacent structures.

“One male patient was in a critical state of health due to facial, neck and inhalation burns, and was transported to Glenwood hospital.

 

“The other three were in serious but stable conditions due to inhalation and superficial burns around their bodies.

“All three others were transported by ambulances to Tambo Memorial and Sunshine hospitals respectively.”
